YARD & LOGISTICS MANAGER

Overview

While respecting and embodying Raven’s Zero Waste and community building philosophy throughout, the incumbent’s focus is on leading yard operations, including metals, e-waste and shipping. This is a busy and dynamic position that demands an exceptional ability to balance administrative and operational duties.

The Yard Manager works closely with all members of the Raven team. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to lead with dignity and respect, and a good sense of humor are essential.

Compensation: $68,000 to $78,000 Annually
Common Good Plan, annual bonuses based on length of employment and performance

Duties & Responsibilities

Administrative

• Recruitment, training, performance management, team building and scheduling of yard, e-waste and metals employees
• Budget management and reporting
• Management of shipping and receiving paperwork and data entry
• Routine monitoring of the yard for safety and environmental compliance
• Bidding on tenders, such as for the management of e-waste.
• Maintaining current understanding of commodity prices and markets and negotiating new arrangements with brokers when necessary.

Supervision & labour

• Coordination of metals, e-waste and yard operations
• Maintaining effective use of equipment and staff
• Coordinating receiving, processing and shipping of all materials in collaboration with warehouse and depot staff
• Loading shipping containers to maintain high efficiency and quality of outgoing commodities
• Undertaking the duties and responsibilities of a variety of yard workers as required

Other duties

• Participating in strategic planning with particular focus on metals, e-waste and shipping operations
• Ensuring equipment, and yard are maintained to safety levels required by WCB and fire inspection including snow removal, litter clearing and commodity storage clearances.
• Purchasing supplies as necessary
• Responding to public, customer and funder inquiries and ensure a high level of customer service is provided by all Raven employees
• Sourcing, collecting and processing material for Raven’s wood chip boiler throughout the year to ensure an adequate supply in advance of boiler season.
• Communicating with the City of Whitehorse Waste and Water Services personnel to maintain a good working relationship and collaborate on improving the recycling and waste management systems.
• Occasional project management related to infrastructure maintenance and repair

Required Knowledge & Skills

Required Skills

• Experience with human resource management
• Understanding of workplace safety requirements and legislation, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Employment Standards Act and Yukon Human Rights Act
• Class 5 Driver’s license
• Experience operating heavy machinery, large equipment and a variety of vehicles
• Dedication and commitment to promoting waste reduction and a circular economy and ability to lead by example
• Excellent organizational, time management, prioritization and leadership skills
• Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships among peers, stakeholders, staff and the public
• Proficiency with basic office software such as Excel and ability to transition to new software when needed

Required certifications (training may be provided):

• WHMIS certification
• Standard First Aid/CPR-C
• YHRC Human Rights 101
• Leadership for Safety Excellence
• Joint Health & Safety Committee Training
• Return to Work Training

Recommended training:

• Managing Recycling Systems, Solid Waste Association of North America

Desired equipment operation experience:

Mobile Equipment operation including

• Linde Diesel forklift truck
• CASE diesel forklift truck
• Bobcat skid-steer (S770, S300, T740)
• Linde electric forklift
• Cube vans

Warehouse equipment including

• Harris badger two ram baler
• Harmony vertical baler
• REM glass breaker
• Conveyor systems

Experience with machine maintenance is an asset

Welding experience is an asset

Working Conditions

• Most administrative work is performed under normal office conditions
• Regular use of heavy machinery and mechanical equipment
• Regular exposure to temperature extremes between office, warehouse and yard
• Regular exposure to chemicals, odors, fumes and waste materials
• Physical risk associated with site visits, heavy equipment and mechanical equipment and vehicle operation

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Overview

While respecting and embodying Raven’s Zero Waste and community building philosophy throughout, the incumbent’s focus is on assisting Raven’s management team with a variety of administrative and HR-related tasks.

Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and a good sense of humor are essential.

15-30 hours/week anticipated with the possibility of full time after one year. Flexible work hours are possible.

Compensation: $22 to $27 hourly

Duties & Responsibilities

This position is best suited to someone who enjoys doing a variety of tasks, is happy with an evolving job description and a flexible work week. Examples of duties include:

Administrative

• Assisting with warehouse and depot data entry
• Opening cash and tills for the depot and metals program
• Assisting with year end filing and organizing
• Assisting with preparation of funding reports
• Assisting with payroll procedures
• Coordinating insurance coverage and documentation
• Minute taking at all staff meetings and as required by the Executive Director
• Assisting the Board of Directors with preparation for the Annual General Meeting and other tasks as needed
• Coordinating annual filing with Corporate Affairs
• Invoice preparation and filing
• Management of accounts receivable
• Assisting the Office Coordinator with public relations (answering phones, responding to requests, helping with the Recycling Club) as needed
• Assisting the Executive Director with various tasks as needed
• Occasional research to support the development of policies and procedures

Human Relations

• Helping employees with enrollment in the Common Good Retirement Savings Plan
• Leading WCB claims processes and inquiries
• Coordinating employee surveys and data summaries

Other duties

• Maintaining/coordinating organization of records storage areas
• Assisting the Communications and Zero Waste Coordinators with event planning and coordinating equipment rentals as needed

Required Skills

• Proficiency with computers and basic office software
• Ability to maintain an organized work schedule and environment
• Excellent interpersonal and public facing communication skills
• Excellent minute taking skills
• Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality
• Ability to prioritize tasks and anticipate needs
• Some experience with Simply Accounting software is an asset
• Ability to brew a decent pot of tea (this is a shared responsibility that is essential for maintaining the equilibrium of the team)
• Experience using Sage50 software is considered an asset

• Some remote work is possible
• Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions (all seasons)

METALS PURCHASER

Description: Raven Recycling is looking for a full time metals purchaser. The position involves sorting and weighing metals, assisting customers and handling cash and card payments. Work is performed outdoors year round. Must be able to lift at least 50lbs.

Compensation: $20 to $27 Hourly
Common Good retirement plan employer contribution. Annual bonus if budget allows.

Duration: Permanent

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Keeping the metals area organized and clean and free of snow
• Grading and sorting metals and to maximize their value
• Stripping wire
• Managing Raven’s battery collection and storage
• Managing and maintaining records of purchases
• Assisting the Yard Manager with loading trailers
• Working with the Yard Manager to increase public participation in Raven’s metals program
• Assisting with work in Raven’s warehouse as required

Required skills & experience:

• Experience with and enjoyment of customer service
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
• Interest in learning and expanding skill set

Assets:

• Understanding of workplace safety practices
• Experience driving machinery
• Demonstrated environmental commitment
• Knowledge of non-ferrous metals, including lead-acid batteries

The incumbent must be a flexible, self motivated team player able to work independently and must be able to assess needs and prioritize tasks.

Training will be provided if necessary.

WAREHOUSE/SORTLINE WORKERS

Raven is looking for warehouse and sortline workers.

Job Description:

• Sort through and separate recyclable materials
• Move and organize bins as required
• Daily maintenance and cleaning of sortline/warehouse
• Operation of baling and glass crushing equipment

Qualifications:

• Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
• Desire to work as a team member to coordinate all activities
• Ability to prioritize tasks
• Ability to work safely as well as maintain a clean worksite

Assets:

• Experience with forklift and/or bobcats
• Ability to work Saturdays
• Environmental Commitment

Raven Recycling will provide training on all equipment.

Wage range: $20-27/hr
